Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate the bactericidal effects of 4 kinds of common disinfectants used in clinical and scientific researches against
Burkholderia pseudomallei, so as to provide useful references for biological protection and contamination elimination of
B. pseudomallei during clinical and scientific actions.
METHODS Four disinfectants commonly used in clinical and scientific researches, including iodine, benzalkonium bromide, 75% ethanol, and 84 disinfectants, were selected, and their bactericidal efficiencies against different concentrations of viable bacteria in the bacterium of
B. pseudomallei in unit time were evaluated under different temperatures and different concentrations.
RESULTS It took 10 min for 0.5% iodine and 0.3% benzalkonium bromide, 20 min for 0.5% "84" disinfectant and 5 min for 2% "84" disinfectant to effectively kill
B. pseudomallei. Perasafe
TM and 75% ethanol only needed 3 min to effectively kill
B. pseudomallei under various circumstances.
CONCLUSION Common disinfectants used in clinic have good bactericidal efficiencies against
B. pseudomallei, and Perasafe
TM and 75% ethanol have the best efficiencies. The experiment suggests that the prevention and treatment of spread and infection of
B. pseudomallei is not difficult in the case of a small amount of pathogen operation in the laboratory which has not reached a sufficient level of safety and in the clinical diagnosis and treatment process of
B. pseudomallei in non-strict isolation ward, but the efficiencies of conventional disinfectants also need to be evaluated in more comprehensive animal models, according to the serious dangers and the high risks of infection of
B. pseudomallei.
