Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To explore the related factors for the sharp instrument injuries among health care workers in combination with regional epidemiological survey so as to put forward effective prevention measures.
METHODS The health care workers of a three-A hospital of Qingdao were recruited as the study objects, the questionnaires of sharp injuries were designed based on the department, types of job, onset locations, characteristics of exposure, operation links and medical apparatus, and the epidemiological and statistical analysis was performed for 2246 case-times of sharp injuries that were reported and registered from 2012 to 2017.
RESULTS The sharp injuries of the health care workers mainly occurred in arteriovenous needle extraction (24.31%), placing needle head into sharp instrument box (18.57%), surgical suture (13.40%), drug preparation (9.17%), intravenous injection (7.79%), and there were significant differences (
χ2=1197.31,
P<0.001).The common wards, emergency rooms, PIVAS and infusion rooms were the major locations for the sharp injuries.The steel needles of infusion device (44.84%), surgical suture needle (10.51%), venous indwelling needle (8.59%), vacuum blood draw needle (8.33%) and glass fragment (2.54%) were the major medical apparatuses for the sharp injuries, and there were significant differences (
χ2=758.16,
P<0.001).The health care workers with mild injuries were dominant, most of whom (2141 cases, 95.33%) were cured after treatment and observation.
CONCLUSION it is crucial to develop a set of complete procedure for cognition and treatment of sharp injuries of the health care workers, strengthen the education of occupational safety and carry out the standard prevention so as to reduce the incidence of the sharp injuries among the health care workers.
