Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and genotypes of human papillomavirus infection among the male outpatient department patients of a general hospital.
METHODS The specimens were collected from 5 078 male patients who were initially treated in outpatient department of the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from Jan 2012 to Dec 2022. HPV test was carried out by florescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) , and the subtypes and characteristics of the infection were observed.
RESULTS Totally 1 737 cases were tested positive for HPV among the enrolled male patients, with the total positive rate 34.21%. In terms of the subtypes, the low-risk type HPV6/11 (53.83%) was the most common subtype, followed by the high-risk subtypes HPV16 (13.59%), HPV52 (10.02%), HPV51 (9.15%) and HPV58 (8.35%). In terms of infection status, the patients with simple high-risk infection accounted for 45.60%, the patients with mixed high and low risk infection accounted for 20.26%. There were 1 198 (68.97%) cases of simple infection and 539 (31.03%) cases of multiple infections. Among the patients with the multiple infections, the patients with double infections accounted for 21.13%, the patients with triple infections 6.10%, the patients with quadruple infections 2.53%. Among the patients with multiple infection, the proportion of the patients with mixed high and low-risk infections was higher than that of the patients with simple low-risk infection and the patients with simple high-risk infection(
P<0.05). In terms of age, the positive rate was highest (38.57%) among the patients aged between 20 and 30 years old. The patients presented with diversified diseases, condyloma acuminata and urinary system infection ranked the top 2, accounting for 51.01% and 13.47%, respectively.
CONCLUSION The overall incidence rate of HPV infection shows a downward trend in the 11 years, the incidence of simple low-risk infection shows a downward trend, but the incidence of high-risk infection shows an upward trend. It is necessary to attach great importance to the HPV test and treatment for the male and get vaccinated so as to prevent the HPV infection.
