Effect of ABC classification and 6S management model on management of disposable sterile items in central sterile supply department

    Abstract:
OBJECTIVE  To investigate the effectiveness of applying the ABC classification and 6S management model in the management of disposable sterile items in the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD).
METHODS  This study selected a total of 18, 403, 859 disposable sterile items issued from Jan. to Dec. 2023 as the research subjects, of which, 9, 201, 883 items issued between Jan. and Jun. 2023 managed by the conventional methods as the control group, while 9, 201, 976 items issued between Jul. and Dec. 2023 managed by the ABC classification and 6S management model as the observation group. The qualities of different sterile item managements were compared, and the satisfaction of clinical departments on the CSSD′s services was analyzed.
RESULTS  After the implementation of the ABC classification and 6S management model, the accuracy of stock entry, integrity rate, standardized placement rate, accuracy of distribution, and clinical department satisfaction all raised compared to those before implementation, while the shortage rate decreased with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). After implementation, time consumption for item distributing and inventory were (3.53±0.79)min and(40.50±23.14)min, respectively, both significantly shorter than those before implementation (6.12±1.56)min、(110.23±16.80)min, respectively, P < 0.05. The inventory turnover rate increased from 2.33% to 4.67% (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION  The application of the ABC classification and 6S management model in the CSSD can improve work efficiency, clinical department satisfaction and effectively ensure the quality of sterile item management.
