Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To analyze the diagnosis and treatment of 2 cases of neonatal late-onset sepsis (LOS) caused by Bacillus cereus, so as to guide the clinical diagnosis, treatment and infection control.
METHODS The symptoms, signs, laboratory test results, diagnosis and treatment of 2 cases of neonatal LOS caused by B. cereus were collected. Relevant literatures at home and abroad from Jan. 2010 to Dec. 2023 were retrieved and characteristics, outcome, prognosis and transmission routes of the B. cereus infection were analyzed.
RESULTS Both of the two newborns died, one of them occurred parenchymal hemorrhage. Fifteen out of 41 cases with LOS caused by B. cereus in the literatures died with the fatality rate 36.59%.
CONCLUSION The mortality of neonatal LOS caused by B. cereus is usually high due to delayed and failed antimicrobial therapy, but early detection of the sources of B. cereus contamination will contribute to the effective measures for prevention and control.
