Epidemiological characteristics of rotavirus and adenovirus in stool specimens of children with diarrhea in Lishui

  • OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence of rotavirus (RV) and adenovirus (Adv) infections in stool specimens of children with diarrhea in Lishui and explore the epidemiological characteristics of the common pathogens in the children with diarrhea.METHODS The stool specimens were collected from 2951 children with diarrhea who were treated in the hospital from Jan 2016 to Dec 2017, the RV and Adv antigens in the stool specimens were rapidly detected by using colloidal immunochromatography technique, and the statistical analysis was performed.RESULTS The RV was detected positive in 529 children with diarrhea, with the infection rate 17.93%; the Adv was detected positive in 107 children, with the infection rate 3.63%. Totally 55 children had double infections of RV and Adv, with the infection rate 1.86%. The RV infection was highly prevalent from November to February of next year and was most prevalent in December, with the positive rate 34.75% (P<0.001). The Adv infection was highly prevalent in May and June, and the positive rates were 22.32% and 20.43%, respectively (P<0.001). The double infection of RV and Adv was highly prevalent from December to January of next year, the positive rates were 6.36% and 4.20%, respectively (P<0.001), the incidence of RV infection was decreased with the age (P<0.001)and was the highest in the children aged between 6 and 12 months.CONCLUSION RV and Adv are the predominant pathogens causing diarrhea in the children in the area, and the diarrhea is characterized by seasonal distribution. It is necessary to attach great importance to the detection of RV and Adv for the children with diarrhea aged between 0 and 12 months and choose the rapid and accurate diagnosis method so as to facilitate the clinical diagnosis and treatment.
