Development and application of infectious disease prevention and control information system in health care institutions based on the whole process treatment data

  • OBJECTIVE We aim to develop a new generation of information system for the prevention and control of infectious diseases with great applicability to health care institutions in order to ensure that the management of infectious diseases covers all consulted patients and entire treatment process, as well as meeting the demand for real-time tracking and intervention, then comprehensively reducing the rate of under-reporting and late-reporting, and enhancing the overall prevention and control capability. METHODS A concept of innovative design has been developed to study the entire treatment process of patients in health care institutions. Then we identified the main prevention and control nodes, and built a risk assessment model for infectious diseases, so as to realize tracking, evaluating, and intervening in the treatment process of each patient by using computer technology. RESULTS We have successfully developed the "Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Information System(IDPCIS)", which comprehensively collected process data of patient treatment from the medical information system. The IDPCIS was of real-time capability for monitoring and assessing the risks associated with infectious diseases, thus providing alerts to help clinical staffs for interventions. The IDPCIS had a sensitivity of 98.7% and an accuracy of 97.6%. CONCLUSION We developed an information system for the prevention and control of infectious diseases that integrates surveillance, early warning, management, tracking, and intervention. It breaks the inherent flaws of the traditional surveillance way of infectious disease management and establishes a new model of active real-time surveillance supported by information technology and precision.
