OBJECTIVE To understand the current situation of hospital-acquired infection managements in integrated medical and elderly care institutions in Jiangsu Province, and to provide data for improving the infection prevention and control system in integrated medical and elderly care institutions.
METHODS Twenty-two healthcare institutions in Jiangsu Province were included and an on-site survey was conducted with questionnaires were filled out uniformly by the investigators.
RESULTS Among the types of integrated medical and elderly care institutions, 69.57% were in the form of medical and health institutions established by nursing institutions, while 30.43% were in the form of integrated medical and elderly care institutions carrying out nursing services. The main way to deal with infections among the elderly in the integrated medical and elderly care institutions was to treat them first in their own institutions, and then transfer them to hospitals if necessary (82.61%). The organizational structure, policies, layout and procedures, infection control knowledge training and medical waste management in these integrated medical and elderly care institutions were relatively well-established (all >90%). Disinfection or sterilization of reused medical devices was implemented in 86.96% of the institutions, 86.96% of the work areas were equipped with quick-drying hand sanitizers and 78.26% verified the relevant certificates for disinfection products and devices. Environmental hygiene and infection case monitoring was routinely conducted in 43.48% and 60.87%of the institutions, respectively. Invasive procedures were performed in 65.22% of the institutions during routine work, mainly were urinary catheterization and nasogastric tube insertion.
CONCLUSION There are certain deficiencies and shortcomings in the infection prevention and control ststems for the integrated medical and elderly care institutions, which need to be further improved according to their actual institutions.
